Last night something happened that changed my life. 10 plus years ago I created something that changed the world forever, in good and bad ways. What I created led to me being nicknamed “MJ The Terrible”, and it is also the reason I was awarded the Distinguished Intelligence Cross for Cyberwarfare.
Even though the event happened over a decade ago, I still occasionally have night terrors about it where I toss and turn and wake up in the middle of the night sweaty and yelling. When it happens, I usually go sit in the shower and just be by myself for a while, or I go sleep in a spare bedroom.
Last night it happened, and I woke the whole house up. All of our babies were sleeping with Malia and I, and when jolted out of my sleep yelling, so did our babies.
Our oldest daughter Elizabeth started crying and said, “Daddy mad.”. I hugged her and told her Daddy had a nightmare, but everything is ok. I was going to hold her and our son Cash until they fell asleep. Then I was going to go sleep in a spare bedroom.
After Liz and Cash fell asleep, I started to leave the room and Malia said while she was whisper crying, “You are not leaving this room filled with love to go be in a dark place. Stay here with us.”
I said to Malia, “What if I have another night terror and accidentally hurt our babies or something?” Malia said that I wouldn’t because I never have before, and I was better off being in a room full of love than I am anywhere else. She also said in a roundabout way it teaches the kids that we don’t run from our problems. We face problems together as a family.
Malia was right. Last night was the first time in all these years that I was able to go back to sleep the same night after a night terror.
I woke up this morning with my family laying on me, and I felt like a new chapter of my life was beginning. Some things in life can’t be bought, they can’t be replicated, and they are just priceless moments that you will never forget.
Malia, thank you for providing me with the prospective I needed last night.
