I am so proud of my 5 year old for something he did this week. There’s only one African American kid in his class, and my son noticed that none of the other kids were really talking to/playing with him, so my son decided to change that!
CJ(my son) walked up to Alias, and said- Maybe no one is playing with you because you’re the only black kid in class. If I was the only black kid in the class, I would want someone to play with me. Did you know that a black guy was the President when I was born?
Alias: No.
CJ: Are you nice?
Alias: Yes.
CJ: Do you want to not care about what colors we are and just be friends?
Alias: Yes. Thank you for being nice to me.
CJ: I like your back pack. I have the same one. Who’s your favorite wrestler?
Alias: John Cena I guess. Maybe the Rock.
CJ: The Rock is the Tooth Fairy too.
Alias: I like being your friend.
CJ: Me too.
Note: CJ, the world is made up of all different types of people, with different skin colors, different religions, different ages, etc, and the fact that you realize that deep down inside, people are people, regardless of the color of their skin, makes me so proud of you! The world could use more kind and compassionate people like you little buddy.
Regardless of someone’s color, age, religion, etc., as Martin Luther King said- Judge someone based on the content of their character, not the color of their skin, even if the person is blue.
