On November 5, 1605, Guy Fawkes and other conspirators attempted a gunpowder plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London, in an effort to help restore Catholicism in England.
Although the gunpowder plot failed, the event was so significant that we still celebrate it four hundred years later by shooting off fireworks, making bonfires, and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes. Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night, is annually held on November 5th.
The Guy Fawkes Mask, a symbolic depiction of Guy Fawkes’ face, which was popularized by the movie “V for Vendetta,” has become a global symbol of protest against corrupt politicians and institutions.
Remember, Remember the Fifth of November
Guy Fawkes Night Rhyme
Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
To blow up the King and Parliament.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England’s overthrow;
By God’s providence he was catch’d
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holla boys, Holla boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
And what should we do with him? Burn him!
