The History of Friday the 13th

The exact history of why Friday the 13th is seen as unlucky is not known, but there are many theories about it. In the Bible, Cain killed his brother Abel on Friday the 13th. More than 100 of the Knights Templar are believed to have been tortured and later killed by King Philip IV on Friday, October 13th, 1307. A character in the play “Les Finesses Des Gribouilles, in 1834, says- “I was born on a Friday, December 13th, 1813, from which come all of my misfortunes.”

Friday the 13th has inspired an American horror franchise series of slasher movies.

Friday the 13th movie releases:

1. Friday the 13th (1980)
2. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
3. Friday the 13th Part III (1982)
4. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
5. Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)
6. Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI (1986)
7. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)
8. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
9. Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
10. Jason X (2001)
11. Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
12. Friday the 13th (2009)

Friday the 13th has even inspired a phobia. A fear of Friday the 13th is called Araskavedekatriaphobia, aka Friggatriskaidekaphobia.

Many people believe the number 13 is an unlucky number. Some believe the number 13 is unlucky due to the 13th guest at the Last Supper being Judas, who betrayed Jesus. In Norse mythology, the 13th god, Loki, is the god that brings chaos and death. Numerologists think the number 13 is unlucky because of its relation to the number 12. The number 12 is considered complete (12 months in a year, 12 apostles, 12 tribes of Israel, 12 gods of Olympus, 12 hours on a clock). Therefore, they see the number 13 as unlucky. The ancient Code of Hammurabi omitted a 13th law from their book of laws. Some buildings, hospitals, and hotels do not have 13th floors, as it can be seen as unlucky to have a 13th floor.

Are the number 13 and Friday the 13th unlucky? Who really knows for sure, but enough people believe they are unlucky for it to be “a thing”, so theories, superstitions, etc., will continue.
