The History of Columbus Day:
Columbus Day (Christopher Columbus Day) is a national holiday in the United States and other countries in the Americas that celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s journey and arrival in the Americas. Christopher Columbus first discovery of the new world (the Americas) occurred on October 12th, 1492, when he arrived on an island in the Bahamas. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer from Genoa who led a Spanish armada across Atlantic Ocean in search of the New World. Christopher Columbus maiden voyage was made on the 3 Spanish ships, the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. His voyage took approximately 3 months.
The first Columbus Day celebration took place in New York, NY on October 12th, 1792, Many Italian Americans observe Columbus Day as a celebration of their heritage. United States President Benjamin Harrison declared Columbus Day as a one-time national celebration in 1892. Legislation to officially designate Columbus Day as a yearly federal holiday was signed by United States President Lyndon Johnson on June 28th, 1968, which to effective beginning in 1971. Since Columbus Day became officially recognized as federal holiday in the United States in 1971, it has been observed on the second Monday in October.
