The Attack on Pearl Harbor:

The attack on American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, at approximately just before 8:00 am local time on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, was a surprise attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service.

Prior to Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States was a neutral country in World War 2. Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii led the United States to formally enter World War 2 on the side of the Allied Powers.

A total of 2,393 Americans were killed, and 1,178 others were wounded, making it the deadliest event ever recorded in Hawaii. It was also the deadliest foreign attack against the United States in its history, until the September 11th, 2001, attacks.

Japan and the United States declared war on each other on December 8th, 1941, the day after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the opening line of his speech to a Joint Session of Congress the following day, famously called December 7th, 1941, “a date which will live in infamy”.

The oldest living survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Warren Upton, passed away on December 25th, 2024, in Los Gatos, California, at the age of 105.
